Dealing with a collection agency for a medical bill from last year. The debt is real, I'm not disputing that, but the way they're going about it is what's getting to me.
They call my cell multiple times a day. I told them I can't take personal calls at work, and they called my job anyway. Last week one of them told me if I didn't pay they'd have my wages garnished. I don't even know if that's legal for them to say.
Someone in a local Facebook group mentioned Nebraska has its own debt collection rules on top of the federal ones, something about collectors having to register with the Secretary of State before they can even collect here. I hadn't heard that before. Is that true? How do I check if this company is actually registered?
Also wondering about the statute of limitations. If the debt is old enough, can they still threaten to sue me? And do I need to be careful about making any kind of payment because it could reset the clock?
I don't have money for a lawyer but I'm tired of dreading my phone ringing. Has anyone else in Nebraska dealt with this?
