If you have been diving into Path of Exile 2, chances are you have run into that incredibly annoying brick wall: the "Failed to Connect to Instance" error. It usually catches you right at the character select screen or when you are trying to jump between zones, completely locking you out of the game.
What is actually happening under the hood is that the game client loses its connection path to a specific, glitchy server-side map area. Because it keeps trying to push you into that broken room, you get stuck in an endless disconnect loop.
The good news is that the community has figured out a handful of reliable ways to trick the game into letting you back in. Here is how to fix it and get back to grinding.
How to Force Your Way Past the Login Screen
Ctrl + Click the Play Button This is the single best and fastest trick available. When you are on the character selection screen, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and click "Play" or "Enter Game". Doing this forces the game to spawn you directly into a fresh version of your most recent town or hideout, completely ignoring the broken instance that was holding your character hostage.
SBlockedword/sentence Your Server Gateway Before you click log in, look at the main menu and manually sBlockedword/sentence your regional gateway. If you usually play on US East, swap over to US West, or even try an EU or AUS server. This forces your client onto a completely different server cluster, leaving the bugged instance behind. Once you log in successfully, you can always sBlockedword/sentence back to your preferred gateway.
Change Your DirectX Version Sometimes the loading screen itself gets hard-locked due to rendering issues with certain instances. Try sBlockedword/sentenceing your in-game renderer from DX12 to DX11 in the graphics menu. If you can't even get to the menu, open up your Steam library, right-click Path of Exile 2, go to Properties, and add "-dx11" to your Launch Options.
Use a Temporary VPN If your character feels completely bricked and nothing else is working, fire up a VPN. Route your connection through a totally different region and try logging in. This shifts your network routing entirely, which almost always breaks the login loop. Once you are safely in a town, you can turn the VPN off.
Check Your Windows Firewall The game's connection can occasionally get tripped up by your security settings. Go into your Windows Network Security settings and manually add an outbound firewall exception for the Path of Exile 2 executable file to ensure your system isn't blocking the server response.
How to Fix the Error While You Are Already In-Game
Sometimes you can log in just fine, but the error strikes when you click a Waypoint or walk into a zone portal. If a specific area is giving you this error and refusing to load, open up your world map.
Hold down Ctrl and click on the destination zone or waypoint. A small menu will pop up showing the active instances. Click "New" to abandon the glitched version of the map and spin up a brand-new copy on the server. Keep in mind that doing this will reset the monsters and the fog of war for that specific zone, but it beats being stuck outside.
