Troops from the 226 Battalion under Sector 4, part of Operation HADIN KAI, have successfully disrupted an alleged extortion mission by insurgent elements, forcing them to retreat while recovering weapons and ammunition during an ambush operation in Borno State.
A security analyst disclosed this development in a statement posted on social media, explaining that the operation followed credible intelligence indicating that pockets of militants were moving within the battalion's area of responsibility to collect illegal levies from herders.
Acting on this information, troops collaborated with local hunters to establish an ambush position along high ground in Guyaku District at approximately 11:15 p.m. on August 6.
Contact was reportedly established with the insurgents at around 4:42 a.m. on August 7, triggering an exchange of gunfire that forced the militants to abandon their mission and scatter into surrounding terrain.
Subsequent search of the area yielded recovery of one AK-47 rifle, an accompanying magazine, 15 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, one locally manufactured pistol, and three rounds of 9mm ammunition.
According to the security analyst, no casualties were recorded among the troops during the operation.
He characterised the ambush as part of ongoing efforts under Operation HADIN KAI to restrict militant movement and disrupt illegal taxation networks that have historically funded and sustained insurgent activities within parts of Borno State.
Troops successfully concluded the operation and returned safely to base following the area clearance.
